Quote Interpretation

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

Interpretation

Due to how broad the engineering field is, the vast majority of people think that engineering is merely putting things together when it is actually more than just that. Engineering is the application of both science, math and engineering design to solve problems and applying it in real-life such as planning, designing and building of machines, electrical systems, infrastructure etc. On top of that, there are different types of engineering such as civil, mechanical, marine and many more and therefore, different purpose, application and job scope. In addition, engineering can be complex and thus, explaining it in detail to people who are unfamiliar with engineering would be a challenge.

  1. I concur with the interpretation in the accuracy of the notion mentioned as well as the focus pertaining to the challenges engineers face in explaining their work to the general public.

I am impressed with the clarification on the misconception provided by the interpreter as he managed to address the common misconception that engineering is far more than just assembling things. The emphasis provided touched on the ground that engineering covers a wide range of activites, from problem-solving to designing and constructing complicate systems which extends beyong mere assembly.

In addition, his acknowledgement pertaining to the complexities for engineers in educating individuals who lack a background in the field highlights the difficulties engineers face when attempting to effectively communicate the significance of their work to the general public.

Overall, this is a well-versed interpretation of the quote given.

  2. I strongly agree with your point of view. We are learning across many different kinds of the modules to gain theory based knowledge about the engineering industry. It is difficult for us to apply what we have learnt in the beginning and able to explain to other people in details.
